What happens when someone dies in Derriford Hospital?

When someone close to us dies, the experience can be overwhelming, and being faced with unfamiliar arrangements can add to an already difficult time. Families may have questions about what to expect, who they will hear from, and what they need to do next. One question we wanted to answer is: “What happens when someone dies in Derriford Hospital?”

Having a clear understanding of the process can help provide some reassurance and make the days following a bereavement feel a little less daunting. Below, Shaun Harrison, Funeral Director for Plympton and Ivybridge, offers guidance to help families understand what to expect during this difficult time.

What happens when someone dies in Derriford Hospital?

The person who has died will be taken to the Hospital Mortuary, after the death has been registered and the family have been able to spend time with them.

The Medical Examiner will contact the family when they have received notification of the death and discuss the content.

Once authorised, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) will be sent electronically to the Register Office who will telephone the family to make an appointment.

We will collect your family member from the hospital once we have written permission at the Arrangement Interview and the MCCD has been received.
