Can I have a non-religious funeral in a church?

When planning a funeral, it’s important to choose a service that reflects your loved one’s wishes and beliefs. If you’re considering a church service but would prefer something without religious elements, you may be asking, “Can I have a non-religious funeral in a church?” Funeral director Keith Peacock answers:

Can I have a non-religious funeral in a church?

Usually, the answer is no, as the church is a place of Christian worship and the service will be led by the vicar, priest, or minister and will often include bible readings and hymns.

You can still personalise the funeral with music, readings, poems, and family involvement, but it will still contain religious elements.

For a non-religious service, you might choose the crematorium or hold the funeral in the Funeral Director’s premises with a celebrant.

Please speak to your WCP funeral director for advice.
