Do I Need to Use a Hearse for the Funeral?

When arranging a funeral, you may wonder whether a traditional hearse is essential or if there are other ways to transport a loved one on their final journey. If you’re asking yourself, “Do I need to use a hearse for a funeral?”, it’s worth knowing that there are several options to consider, allowing you to choose an approach that feels right for you and your family.

Do I need to use a hearse for the funeral?

Neil Reeves, funeral director for East Devon, responds:

“The simple answer is no!

Most funeral directors have a fleet of vehicles that can be utilised for the funeral, starting with the traditional hearse and limousines. In today’s changing climate, more people want the personalisation of a funeral, including vehicles. In certain local traditions, the coffin may be carried by hand from the point of service to the point of rest.

We run a fleet of BMW cars as the preferred fleet; however, we can arrange pretty much any mode of transport: the traditional horse-drawn, motorbikes, right up to tractors and even army tanks are available, with access to buses and lorries as well.

The Routemaster bus that we can use holds the coffin and up to 48 passengers; a lovely tribute to an ex-clippie or driver, where the family and mourners can travel together.

If you want something different, don’t be afraid to ask the funeral director; you may be very surprised by the answer!”
